Are you a Stream or a Waterfall?

Are you a Waterfall or a Steam

Let’s talk about Passion.

Specifically finding and living your passion and purpose.

When I start working with a client, one of the questions I ask them about is what they feel passionately about.

Well this woman, who happens to be a very successful and accomplished boss lady, said “I had a really hard time with that one, I really don’t feel PASSIONATE about anything, there isn’t anything that I would drop everything or turn my world upside down for.  I just think I don’t feel that strongly about things.” And I could tell she felt like there was something wrong with this.

So I told her that there was absolutely nothing wrong with this, because everyone feels and responds differently to things.

Also, there is a range of emotion each of us feels and expresses, and some people have a wide range and strong reactions and some people have a shorter range and have less strong reaction…it’s all on a continuum and varies person to person and situation to situation.

We are all different levels of excitable, in different situations in our lives. And not any one way is wrong

It is true that some people dull their emotional response as a protective mechanism, but that is a topic for another article.

I am talking about the natural variation in people.

Here is an analogy, when it comes to excitement or passion, some people are like a waterfall and some people are like a stream.

They are equally natural, equally beautiful and equally powerful.

And the range necessary for us to have balance in our world.

Can imagine if all we had were waterfalls? It would be absolutely exhausting!  And the waterfalls, are helpful to get the streams moving forward, but the streams give the waterfalls a place to land and get calm.

See, we balance each other out.

The world is a better place because we have both waterfalls and streams. So don’t feel bad or disheartened if during the “passion” conversation, you don’t feel gang-busters about something, maybe you are a stream.

So I am going to rewrite my question and change the word passion to excited. So it will read “What do you get excited about?” Because although not everyone feels PASSION or should feel PASSIONATE everyday  (in the popular sense of the word), I think everyone should feel some about of excitement and enjoyment everyday.

If we commit to feeling excitement and enjoyment everyday, we will be excited and joyful to wake up and engage in life everyday…and that’s the point of all this, right?

So if you don’t find excitement and joy in your everyday, start discovering what bring that into your life everyday.  So start exploring and trying new things…you will get there!

Psst…your excitement and joy factors may already be in your life, maybe you just spend too much time focusing on the wrong stuff.

But if I were to guess, your purpose/passion/excitement formula will be a little bit of a lot of stuff…

Appreciating what is already in your life + letting go of stuff + saying Yes to some new stuff = passion/purpose/excitement

Ok, now I want to hear from you!  What are you, a waterfall or a stream? What is your passion/purpose/excitement formula?

Passionately yours,

Sally
