Shade and Shine

This weekend, my husband and I and our kids decided to drive to Missouri (where my husband is from) to watch the complete solar eclipse.

Watching the total eclipse would be incredible, but I was dubious I was a little unsure because I just it takes 12+hours to drive from Austin to Columbia Missouri and 12+ hours to drive back. That is 24 hours of total driving for less than 3 minutes of action.

But we did it, and it was totally worth it.

It was exciting as the moon began to slowly cover the sun. But it was beyond incredible when totality happened and the moon totally covered the sun.   It was so incredible and hard to put into words. And then as moon continued on it’s travels off the face of the sun there was this bright red flare and this moment awe-inspiring that I squealed with delight. I think we were all struck in such of profound way, I was completely filled with love and awe.

But now the climax of the solar eclipse was over, we all started to move on, the kids ran inside, the adults started getting lunch ready.

And as I was standing inside helping with lunch and chatting wit everyone, I felt an intense pull to go back outside and watch how the second half of the eclipse unfolding. So I grabbed my special glasses and walked back outside laid down on my blanket.

And as lay there, watching these celestial bodies continue their destined path, I felt a profound power and energy as the sun was transformed again into its previous brilliance.

And I was struck by the majesty of the sun coming back to itself.

This made me think of each of us, of our path and our own potential for transformation. This made me think of my own ongoing transformation.

Just like the sun and the moon, we are celestial beings, with a path and a destiny in our lives. And sometimes our life, circumstances, choices, fellow beings throw shade on us and our brilliance gets covered.

Our sunshine can’t be seen or felt for a while.

And then something happens, the truth of ourselves flares to life and we begin returning to ourselves, to our brilliance. And some people are there waiting to see this transformation, and some people are not and that’s ok, everyone will benefit from your new refound warmth.

For the sun, this transformation just happens as part of a destined cosmic path…and in some ways our path is a destined too, but we also have the choice.

The choice is not whether we will have shade in our lives, our choice is how long and deep we will dwell in that shade.

We each have a choice, of when and how we will step out of the shade and begin to shine again.

With shine and brilliance,

Sally
