We have the power within us…

Words are powerful and the way we talk to our friends, family, children and significant others, has a huge impact on them and our relationship with them.  If we engage with our loved ones with generosity, support and loving kindness we will receive from them an abundance of loving kindness back.  You will also give them the safety and permission to reach their full potential in your relationship and in their own lives.  On the other hand if we are harshly critical, suspicious and restrictive in our interactions with them, they are less likely to succeed, grow and reach their full potential in all areas of their life.

The same is true for our relationship with our self.  If we show loving kindness and self-compassion to our self, we give our self the space and permission to grow, succeed and reach our full potential. On the other hand, if we are constantly harshly self-critical, we limit ourselves and stunt our growth.   No one likes to be berated all the time, even in our own minds. This leaves us less likely to take risks, because why take a risk with someone who constantly hates on you. Taking more risk, will only give them more opportunity to hate.   When we lack self-compassion, we also start to hide truths from our self. Think about it. Why would we uncover personal truths and areas that need improvement, if that will only lead to self-condemnation and further brute? It becomes easier to deny the truth to ourselves (or blame others), because it is painful to hear hatefulness, and so we work to avoid this self-flagellation.

What if on the other hand, it is safe to admit our flaws? What if we accept our own humanity and our own true self? Therefore,  understanding that we are multifaceted, with a full array of flaws and gifts.  And it is these gifts  bring the world it’s magic? Maybe then, we will stop seeing ourselves in black and white, and start seeing ourselves in the many different colors that make us unique and beautiful. When it becomes safe to admit our flaws, we are then able to see the areas in our lives that need change and improvement. Only then can we see our own potential, our own truth, and its this Truth  that will set us free.

So stop being so hard on yourself.

Stop being your own worst critic. It’s not productive.

Instead, be your own biggest champion. When you take a risk or a misstep, say to yourself “Ok, that wasn’t perfect or ideal, but I will and can do better next time”.

Because, I love being a mom, and feel like my potential to grow and love has expanded since bringing my 3 love bunnies into this world, I always use the pure love of parenthood as an analogy for our potential in loving ourselves. So speak to yourself like you would speak to your child, and like you want your child to speak to them self. I never want my children to say the hateful things to themselves that I have said to myself, in my own head.

So start giving yourself a little leeway and permission to be human. This is not permission to digress or become self indulgent, it is just the opposite. It is the permission to be less than perfect and then to succeed in spite of or maybe because of this imperfection . Self love and compassion motivates us to achieve our full potential!
