Pear Dumplings

It’s been a while since, I have Redux’ed a Recipe…so I thought it was about time!

Here is the December Theme:

We’re playing a little party game at the end of 2016: Grab your nearest cookbook and ReDux the recipe on page 201, 16, 216 – or any combination of the number ‘2016.’

So, I choose page 210 of my 1997 Southern Living Cookbook (which I was lucky to snag at a Library book sale  a few years ago)

Now you know I am normally a make-from-scratch-kinda gal, but sometimes you just have to use pre-made items because maybe you don’t have time to make it from scratch or it will simply taste better (edible) if you purchase it from the store.  Well, this is how I feel about Pie Crusts. I think it’s important to know your strengths and weakness…and one of my weakness is making from-scratch pie crust.

Trust me, everyone is happier this way.

And purchasing your pie crusts make these Pear Dumplings, so simple, easy and delicious.  And the best part…they look fancy, people will be super impressed by your mad skills.

And as far as desserts so, pretty darn healthy, because this is mainly pear with a touch of brown sugar and spices.

You simply core and peel your select number of pears, stuff them with brown sugar, walnuts and spices, wrap in pie crust and voila! Done.

On a Whim, I added about 2Tbsp Eggnog to each pear and OMG, it was AH.MA.ZEING! It just added that extra little bit of festive flair.  SO this is an optional addition, but I HIGHLY recommend this!

YUM!

Serves: 6

Ingredients
  • 6 Pears (1-1/2 per person) Any kind will do, but don't get them too large or your pie crust won't fit
  • 3 rolls of flat pre-made pie crust
  • ½cup brown sugar
  • 6 Tbsp butter
  • 1tsp Cinnamon
  • ¼ cup Walnuts
  • ½cup water
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 1 Orange peel
  • Optional: Egg Nog
Instructions
  1. Core each pear, leaving top on and about 1inch at the top (careful here, it's easy to pop the top off)
  2. Peel each pear - reserve the peels for simple syrup
  3. Melt butter and mix with Brown sugar, walnut pieces and cinnamon
  4. Stuff 1 pear with about 1 Tbsp of brown sugar mixture
  5. Cut pie crust in half. And using rolling pin, make slightly bigger
  6. Place stuffed Pear on Pie crust and gently wrap in pie crust. Tear off any excess dough and wrap around bottom, to ensure stuffing doesn't come out.
  7. Repeat with all the Pear and place in buttered baking dish.
  8. Bake in 375degree oven for 40 minutes
  9. After 40minutes place foil on top to keep from over browning.
  10. While Pears are baking, place peels, water, sugar and orange peel in a sauce pan and bring to a slow boil to make simple syrup. Just before pouring on pears, remove the peels from syrup.
  11. Pour Syrup over pears and Serve.
  12. Optional: I added about 2 Tbsp of egg nog to each pear and it was awesome, so I highly recommend this delicious addition.
