Summertime is a time of travel, adventure and fun!

We are definitely out of our regular eating and lifestyle routine on vacations! Vacation is all about exploring, trying new things, relaxing and enjoying the easy life, But sometimes, we go overboard with the indulgence and return from our trip feeling a little blah.

Here are ten ways to stay on track during your vacation so you feel as vibrant when you get back as you do going into the vacation!

10 Healthy Eating Tips for Your Next Vacation

1. Plan ahead: Before your trip, take some time to research the local cuisine and find out if there are any healthy dining options available. Look for restaurants that offer fresh, whole foods and focus on local ingredients.

2. Pack healthy snacks: Bring along some nutritious snacks like fresh fruits, nuts, granola bars, or pre-cut vegetables. These snacks can come in handy when you’re on the go or if healthy options are limited.

3. Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout your vacation to stay hydrated. Carry a reusable water bottle with you and refill it regularly. Avoid excessive consumption of sugary drinks or Alcohol, as they can dehydrate.

4. Practice portion control: While indulging in local cuisine is part of the vacation experience, try to practice portion control. Be mindful of your serving sizes and avoid overeating. Listen to your body’s hunger and fullness cues.

5. Find Balance: Eat balanced meals with a good mix of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats. Look for dishes incorporating lean meats, whole grains, and plenty of vegetables. Avoid deep-fried or heavily processed foods.

Not only does it often have lots of extra calories and sugary. And it’s not just about the calories. Alcohol impacts metabolism, decreasing fat oxidation and increasing fat storage. It impacts blood sugar regulation. And sleep! Alcohol messes with our sleep cycles big time. And we may not sleep well when we travel because we aren’t in our own bed, different sounds…the booze only makes this worse! Don’t get me wrong! I love a nice glass of wine or two at a fantastic restaurant, but I always know it could mess up my sleep. 

8. Stay active: Incorporate physical activity into your vacation routine. Take walks, explore the area on foot, go swimming, or participate in activities that keep you active. This will help balance out any indulgences and keep you feeling energized.

9. Practice moderation: Remember that vacations are a time to relax and enjoy yourself. While eating healthy is essential, don’t stress too much about every meal. Allow yourself some treats or local specialties in moderation, but try to maintain a balance overall.
